You see, Communist ideology IS strategy.

In a flash I grasped the brilliance of the whole long range strategy. It is not necessary that a deception be perfect. It is not necessary that the KGB control everything that happens.

What mattered, from first to last, was the character of the capitalist system in America and the West.

This is what Marx and Lenin taught, after all. Communist victories have always depended on the stupidities that attend bourgeois society.

Marx understood these stupidities better than anyone. Such was the real subject of his study.

You see, Communist ideology IS strategy.

Mao understood this when he said that he had a weapon better than the atomic bomb, and that weapon was Marxism-Leninism.

You defeat someone if you study their weaknesses and devise your weapons accordingly.

The West is into consumption, it desires peace, so let them consume and let them dream of peace! Scare them with a few Cold War confrontations and get their hopes up with a spectacular peace offensive.

Even Ronald Reagan couldn't resist. He hugged Gorbachev in Red Square. Do you realize how simple it all is? What mattered was the willingness of every section of society to be fooled by this exact sort of thing.

Tell the West that Communism is dead. Tell them you are running up the white flag. The conservatives would claim victory, and want to believe it. The business men would claim the "peace dividend," and believe it. The consumer would see cheaper goods in the store, and believe it. Everyone would rejoice that the nuclear standoff between East and West would be over, and believe it.

The left would be glad, because people wouldn't be so paranoid of socialst ideals.

People like good news. They cling to it. But still, it was so incredible.
